An estimated 130,200 cases of colorectal cancer including 93,800 of colon cancer and 36,400 of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in 2000. Colorectal cancers are the third most common cancers in men and women and second leading cause of cancer deaths today. An estimated 56,300 deaths (47,700 from colon cancer, 8,600 from rectal cancer) in 2000, account for about 11% of all cancer deaths. When colorectal cancers are detected in an early, localized stage, the 5-year relative survival rate is 90%; however, only 37% of colorectal cancers are discovered at that stage. After the cancer has spread regionally to involve adjacent organs or lymph nodes, the rate drops to 65%. The 5-year survival rate for persons with distant metastases is 8%. Survival continues to decline beyond five years.
Over the past two and one-half years I have come to realize just how important the selection of your cancer treatment team is. There should be a strong relationship between your primary care doctor, surgeon, oncologist, radiologist and gastroentlogist. I was very fortunate to have been referred to the Texas Cancer Center. Dr. Sanja Awasthi has been my lead oncologist since my first surgery in December 1999 and is supported by other cancer specialist on staff. Chemotherapy, radiation, blood test, MRI and CT scans are all under one roof. Hi,
